Outdoor Experiences

Let us show you this amazing world around us. We want all our guests to fall in love with the outdoors. We certainly see God in all the scenery, flora, and fauna that we live in the midst of. Join us in one of our Nature Sessions and we'll explore exciting places and see exciting things. We might even learn something new. Here are our sessions:

Nature Hike: One of the best ways to find out about nature is to set out walking. We'll walk one of Lakeshore's trails and share points of interest. We'll ask questions, observe, and enjoy the sites.

Snakes: Most people are squeamish around snakes, but we’ll let you look at and hold a tame snake, to understand them a little better. We'll talk about the amazing things that snakes do and try to understand better why they are important to our ecosystem.

Night Hike with Owl Calls: The woods are a different place at night. We will take a walk in the dark and see how the forest changes. We'll talk about nocturnal animals and how our eyesight is altered in the dark. We'll practice relying on our other senses as our eyes become less reliable. We'll end the hike by calling owls and maybe getting an answer.

Birds: You may not see a deer, raccoon, or coyote every time you walk in the woods, but if you pay enough attention you should always see some type of bird. We’ll spend time getting to know some of the common birds in Tennessee, what they look like, and the sounds they make. We'll take a checklist out, and see how many different types of birds we find.

Food in the Woods: For thousands of years, Native Americans lived in these woods, and there was enough for them to eat. In addition to hunting, they sustained themselves on the native plants of the forest. Even European settlers relied on many of the plants before a grocery store was always within 10 miles. We'll go out into the woods and find some of these food sources, and if the season is right, we may even get to sample them.

Learning Trees: How many times have you been on a walk and wondered what type of tree you were standing under? In this session, we'll go out and identify the most common trees in the forest. We'll share interesting facts about each type of tree and common uses for them. It’s a nice feeling to pass by and know what type of tree you're looking at. This session is, of course, much more interesting in Spring, Summer, or Fall when leaves are still on the trees. We can be very flexible with time frames. Any of these sessions can last from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Please reserve these lessons in advance, so we can provide a guide for you. There may be an extra cost for these activities, depending on what programming is already being done with a group. Just speak with Troy Taylor at 731-584-6102 or troy@lakeshoreuma.com.
