Lakeshore UMA News
See our Creek from your computer
If you miss Lakeshore's creek, go to www.youtube.com and type in "Lakeshore Creek." You'll see a movie I shoot about a month ago. Hope you like it. I'm hoping to also have a version of it on this website available for download.

Trying to Keep up in Cyberspace
To help us all stay better informed and keep this community going, Lakeshore has created a blog site. We will post news and thoughts, and you all are free to comment. We want this to help our Christian witness, so please be sensitive about what you say (comments will be screened before they are posted). Make sure that your talk is relevant to the whole Lakeshore community too, not just a few people (that's what email's for). The address is lakeshoreuma.blogspot.com. Hope to hear from you soon.

Very Different - Yet the Same
It is hard to believe that next year Lakeshore UMA will be celebrating a 60th anniversary! With the camp slowly creeping toward the status of Senior Citizen, we are proud to say that Lakeshore still has a heart beating with the excitement of an elementary camper and the adventurous spirit of a teenager. Although things have changed tremendously in regards to new buildings, progressive programming ideas and a serious commitment to at-risk children and youth, the same spirit that was present at the original camp is still evident at the 'Shore. The songs are different - "Kum Ba Yah" has evolved into "Grace Like Rain", box hockey has given way to soccer and "Lazy River" has taken on an entirely different meaning. Some things have not changed at Lakeshore. A sparkling campfire still seems to call us to examine ourselves deeply and to explore our connection with God. The calm river has a way of reassuring our soul. A late night discussion in the cabin (along with some treats you aren't supposed to have) has a way of bonding totally different individuals into a strong cohesive group willing to support and encourage each other from year to year. Children still hear stories from parents about the life-changing experiences that occurred on the Hill. A lot of things are totally different -- one thing is not. God still speaks, moves and touches hearts at Lakeshore. Praise God for his unchanging grace!

It's finally here
Fall. The feel of autumn. The breeze rustling through the falling leaves. I am scrambling to find that light jacket I stashed somewhere last spring. (Where in the world of Gary did I put that jacket?) Hayrides, campfires and smores. And football. Funny, odd, kinda crazy feeling. Football is half-over, and I am just now looking for my jacket. I sit looking out my window. The greens of the forest are beginning to speckle with shades of yellow, red, orange and brown (mostly brown). I've been waiting, wondering what has caused it to take so long. (Has it always taken this long?) Maybe I just pay more attention to time now or, perhaps, the global warming activists (of which I am one) have infiltrated my head, to the point that the peak of the fall season in November seems like further evidence of climate change. No matter. It rained last week and autumn came home. The dust settled on the roadside, the wildlife took a deep sigh of relief, and our rocky creek bed is, once again, hosting the energetic flow of crisp, clear water. Late to arrive or not, I am happy to welcome the fall, to celebrate another proud season of ministry, and to anticipate the joys of holiday cheer already in the air. The air. Has anyone seen my jacket? Happy autumn everyone, Papa G

We need Old Lakeshore Summer Staff Pictures
Lakeshore is compiling all the years of summer staff pictures we can find. We currently (thanks to Gary Lawson’s dedication to photography) have summer staff pictures on our website from 1993 to present (and 1968, 1972, 1986 thanks to some former staff). We need those years from 1992 and back. So if you have a picture of the entire (or most of the) summer staff of those years -- especially if they have their staff shirts on from that year -- please scan them and send them to troy@lakeshoreuma.com. If you can remember names and what position they served, include that in your email. In the meantime, go to the website and look under "staff," to look at the changes in people and style over the summers.
